Memory : Pattern Memory
Cognitive training

Pattern Memmory training: A pattern is a way of organizing information using symmetries, reoccurrences, and contrasts. The aims of Pattern Memory are to train the memory to recall information and to train pattern memory itself. Recall memory tasks call upon a particular type of cognitive processing in that the person must reconstruct the information. The situations and the difficulty levels lead the clients to use visual support contained in the patterns.

No musical knowledge is required, although clients with musical training may find this task easier than those as pattern comprehension facilitates the reconstruction of information during recall.

Target Clientele

Children and adults (6 years and older) who:

NOTE: May be used by anyone as a simple cognitive training activity.

Target Skills

Mode: Visual and Auditory
Principal skill(s) targeted: Recall memory using simple musical language elements

Exercises

    Levels
Stimuli Classes: Sole 29

Scenario and task: In this scenario, the client is a musician learning music by heart. He/she must reproduce from memory, a series of notes appearing on a staff presented upon a musical partition. These notes are simultaneously heard and posted. They remain visible on the partition for a certain amount of time before disappearing. Two seconds later, some notes may reappear. The client must then reconstruct the original staff/pattern by choosing the corresponding notes at the bottom of the screen, and then place them in the appropriate position on the staff. The minim, crochet, and quaver are used, and the pitch ranges from D (re), located directly below the staff, to C (sol), located immediately above the staff.

Response mode(s): Click on mouse to select a note, place curser in the appropriate place on the staff, then click on the mouse again to place the note. It is also possible to use the arrow keys, RETURN to select a note, the arrow keys to place the curser in the appropriate place on the staff, then RETURN again to place the note.

Feedback:

Well Done! Correct response
Oops… Incorrect response

Difficulty Level Variables

Level Completion Criterion: Three successfully reproduced staffs

The exam

The exam is comprised of 15 items representative of all difficulty levels.
